why is 5th grade camp a big deal?

Why is 5th Grade Camp a big deal?

Because it's where science meets adventure! Kids get to explore trails, study nature up close, gaze at the stars, and discover what they're capable of--all while making memories (and inside jokes) tha twill last forever. For some, it's the first taste of independence away from home. FUN FACT: Most campers say this is their favorite memory of 5th grade!

What if I don't want to send my student to camp?

While we'd love for every student to experience Outdoor Science Camp, we completely understand families may choose not to participate. Whatever the reason--personal preference, timing, or other circumstances--your child will be well taken care of and will attend regular classes on campus during camp week. To help us plan fundraising efforts and resources, please let us know as early as possible if your student will not attend.

Where can I find more information?

Your student's 5th grade teachers and the 5th Grade Camp Committee are always a great, frontline source for questions. In addition, if you missed or would like to revisit it, you'll find below a link to the Zoom meeting hosted by the director of Three Oaks Science Camp held 10/14. This session is packed with helpful details and answers to frequently asked questions.

camp donations

What are camp donations?

The suggested family contribution for 5th grade camp is $475 per student. Families who are able are encouraged to contribute the full $475 for their student. This aims to cover the bus ride, cabins, meals, and all the cool activities. This amount is treated as a donation rather than a fee. That means every child who wants to attend camp will be able to go, regardless of their family’s financial situation. The total donations and fundraising efforts go into one pool. For camp to happen, we must collectively raise enough to cover the cost for all students who want to attend.

What if we can't donate the full amount or any of the suggested contribution?

If you are unable to contribute the full amount, you can donate what you can. We also have a monthly option to donate over time. If you are unable to contribute any amount, we encourage you to participate in fundraising opportunities. Regardless, please be sure to contact Mrs. LaRoche at larochen@fvsd.us or Mr. Tilka at tilkaj@fvsd.us as soon as possible to explore available financial options and so we can plan our fundraising efforts accordingly.

Can we donate more than $475?

Absolutely! Extra donations help cover costs for other students and makes sure things like buses and supplies are fully funded. Think of it as sponsoring extra smiles.

Is my donation refundable?

It is Fountain Valley School District's policy that there are NO REFUNDS. All contributions go directly toward the overall cost of camp. Because funds are pooled to make camp possible for every student, refunds cannot be issued if circumstance change (e.g., your child becomes ill or no longer wants to attend). We encourage families to explore travel insurance. This is entirely optional and at each family's discretion, but we want to promote awareness so that parents make the choice that feels right for them. While the 5th Grade Camp Committee has not vetted or endorsed any particular carrier or policy or determined whether coverage would apply under these circumstances, some parents have looked into Travel Guard travel insurance and share that coverage costs around $28.

Can I pay by check?

While we prefer donations be made using the payment link on our website, we are happy to accept checks. Please make checks payable to: Newland PTA. In the memo line, write: 5th Grade Camp and include the student's name if the donation is being made on behalf of a specific student. Checks may be given to your 5th Grade teacher or dropped off at the school front office. Please let the staff know that your check is for 5th Grade Camp and ask them to place it in Ms. Kitahara's mailbox. Once a check has been processed, you can request a receipt by emailing Newlandcamp2026@gmail.com. Please include the student's name and check number in your request.

fundraising

How does fundraising help?

Our fundraisers are actually pretty fun--Sweet Treats, Popcorn Socials, Movie Nights, and Dine-Outs bring families together and raise the money we need. Parents can help by volunteering or just showing up and participating.

Can we come up with our own fundraiser?

Yes please! We love new ideas. If you'd like to run with one, just tell your 5th grade teacher--we'll help make it happen.

How do I ask friends and families to donate?

It's easy! Just share the link below to our donation page with them--they can make a contribution directly online.

What if we fundraise more than we need for camp?

What a happy problem! Any excess funds will be used to support 5th grade end-of-year events first, with any remaining funds donated to the Newland PTA.

camp life

What should my student pack for camp?

Check back here for a detailed list that you can download. A list will also be sent home before camp. In the meantime, here's a quick idea of what they might need: - Clothing: Layers for warm days and cool nights, extra socks, a jacket, and sturdy shoes for hiking -Toiletries: Toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, hairbrush & deoderant -Other essentials: reusuable water bottle, flashlight, sunsreen, hat, and small backpack -Optional: Disposable camera, book for quiet time, stuffed animal or family photo

What's camp life like?

Picture this: cabins with friends, campfire songs, s'mores, family-style meals, hiking, science experiments, and maybe a little late-night giggling before lights-out. It's the perfect mix of learning and fun. And yes, teachers and trained camp staff are there the whole time. FUN FACT: Campers walk over 10,000 steps a day, but somehow still have energy for campfire songs.
